Stretched along the Atlantic Ocean coastline from Cape Town to the Northern Cape (and beyond, to the border of Namibia), the West Coast is known for its picturesque small towns, seasonal wildflowers and quaint fishermen's villages that have become popular West Coast holiday resorts. It’s an incredibly diverse region which encompasses the West Coast National Park, the Cederberg Mountains, the naval port of Saldahna Bay, the Swartland region and more.
The West Coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and cold rainy winters – but it’s not just the weather that reminds you of the Med. Some West Coast holiday destinations, like Paternoster with its azure seas, bone-white beaches and white and blue trimmed cottages, will make you feel as though you’ve arrived in Greece. No wonder the town is such a popular choice for summer holidays. In the winter, it’s equally charming, with plenty of self catering West Coast accommodation promising romantic weekends spent fireside while dramatic storm clouds roll over the grey ocean outside...
Another West Coast gem, Langebaan is only 1 hour and 25 minutes’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, making it one of the best places to stay on the West Coast for a weekend getaway. The town is most famous for water sports, with kite surfing, paddle boarding, sea kayaking and more up for the taking. It’s also an excellent entry point to explore the West Coast National Park.

Getting there Â

What must I pack?
- The summers along the West Coast are very hot and dry, and even though the Atlantic Ocean is considered by many to be too cold to swim in, you’ll want to bring your swimsuit for a refreshing dip here and there!
- Even in summer, the weather can be unpredictable, so always keep a light windbreaker on hand.
- Winters get very cold (and wet). Be sure to pack the appropriate clothing.
- Don’t forget sunscreen, lip balm, hat and sunglasses for summer holidays.
- Always travel with a mini first aid kit and regular prescription medication.
- Hand sanitiser and insect repellent.
- Your camera (or just use your phone).
What can I do to become a responsible traveler?
- Be water-wise. The West Coast is a water-scarce region. Be mindful and sparing with your water usage.
- Support the local economy. Buy local food, souvenirs and support local artisans where possible at markets and pop-up stalls.
Safety tips
- Be safety conscious: don’t display cash or valuables. Leave jewellery and expensive watches at home.
- Keep your belongings safe – use the hotel safe for valuables.
