Reunion: Expect the Unexpected

Reunion might be small in size but it's huge in natural wealth!

This is an island of pristine beaches, azure oceans, soaring mountains, tranquil valleys crossed by rivers and waterfalls, and of course the alluring live volcano.

The beaches are a big attraction and many enthusiast travel to the island just for the water sports like surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing.

But the island has so much more to offer.
For starters there are more than 900 km of marked trails for hikers, whether you are a beginner or experienced. They traverse a very diverse environment from dense rain forests in the east to savannah and sugar cane fields in the west, lunar landscapes on the volcanoes and walks along the shoreline.

This is a rare chance to walk to Piton de la Fournaise, a volcano so exceptional that its volcanic peaks, craters and ramparts have been classified as natural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Each year, around 400,000 visitors set off to take on the famous volcano with the summit peaking at 2,632 metres above sea level. The walk starts on the beach and in two hours leads you to the craters, passing through the rain forest and lunar landscapes of Plaine des Sables. You can of course take the easy option in the form of a heart stopping helicopter ride over the active volcano.

There are also breathtaking walks to the three extinct volcanos, known as calderas, which are now verdant valleys with picturesque villages filled with brightly painted wooden houses.

Other sporting activities include canyoning down rivers and waterfalls, paragliding and pedal powered quad bikes for an exhilarating downhill experience.

For the less energetic take a slow drive around the island and up into the dramatic mountain landscapes or better still plan a round-island itinerary that takes you to quaint villages with comfortable overnight accommodation. Visit local markets, taste local delicacies and brush up on your French.
