Crossing the Border from South Africa

The two most popular ways to get into Mozambique if you are coming from South Africa are by road or by plane. If you are driving yourself, the process is relatively straightforward. You will need your passport, driver's license, car registration papers, proof of insurance, and a visa (if required). It is a good idea to have all of these documents organized and easily accessible before you reach the border.

Once you reach the border crossing, there will be a few formalities to take care of such as getting your passport stamped and paying any applicable fees. After that, you will be free to enjoy all that Mozambique has to offer. Keep in mind that if you are driving yourself, you will need to purchase a temporary driver's license once you are in Mozambique. These can be purchased at any major bank in the country.

From Johannesburg side, the easiest border crossing will be the Komatipoort border. If you’re driving from the Durban side then you’ll find yourself at the Farazul border post. Remember to pack water and snacks with as you could be waiting for quite some time at the border posts during the festive seasons. Also if you have packed meat, dairy and other perishables make sure you have an adequate cooler box in which to store them.

Flying into Mozambique

If you are flying into Mozambique, there are three international airports that serve the country: Maputo International Airport (MPM), Beira International Airport (BEW), and Nampula International Airport (APL). Depending on where you are coming from and what airlines service your airport, one may be closer or more convenient than others.

When flying into Maputo International Airport, there are plenty of taxis available outside of baggage claim that can take you into the city center. The fare should be negotiated before getting into the taxi so that there are no surprises later on. If you are flying into Beira or Nampula, it is best to arrange transportation in advance as taxis may be less available. Uber also operates in Maputo if that is something that you prefer.

You can also easily hire a car at the Maputo International Airport. Trusted companies such as Avis Rental and Europcar make the process quick and painless. Hiring a car once you’re in Mozambique can help save you on time so you get to enjoy more holiday.
