Your first taste of cycling in this picturesque, off-the-beaten-track region takes you from Avignon to L'Isle sur la Sorgue, which is also known as the Venice of Provence because of its location amid a maze of canals and several branches of the Sorgue river. The town is most famous for its many antique shops. While away a few hours visiting the antique shops before enjoying late lunch or a snack in a café. You'll need the energy for the final climb of the day, up to the sleepy village of Venasque. Here, you're treated to stunning valley views and a chance to explore one of France's most beautiful villages.
Dinner on your own & night in Venasque

D3-Venasque > Gorges de la Nesque option > Bédoin
Cycling: about 30 km + 450m / -390m
Possible detour up through the Gorges de la Nesque (up to 35km extra)
The scenery that accompanies your cycling today is of the mountains of Vaucluse, including dramatic Mont Ventoux (1900m). But don't worry, as you don't have to cycle this huge mountain. Instead, you can enjoy leisurely riding in lower terrain close to the crystal-clear waters of the Sorgue river. Many branches of the river flow through this area and irrigate the land, making it an oasis of cool, green countryside -and the ideal terrain for growing grapes.
At the foot of the Ventoux lies the village of Bédoin, which although a tourist hotspot has retained an authentic Provencal atmosphere.

The delightful Ctes du Rhone villages of Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyrasare the first highlights today. There is little doubt that you will have heard of famous and delicious wines of these two locations -and thanks to number of wine cellars, you will have the chance to try these wines in their home region. But there are more highlights today! After 40km of cycling, you'll arrive in the famous Rhone wine village of Chteauneuf du Pape.

This famous wine village -and the surrounding area -is best known for its outstanding red wine and is certainly worthy of a day of exploration. Cycling is the perfect way to go, and you could choose to visit the four neighbouring wine communes of Bédarrides, Courthézon, Orange and Sorgues. If you would simply like to sit and take in your surroundings, find a sunny restaurant terrace and enjoy a day of fine food and local wine. Take an evening stroll to the ruins of the "new" castle of the popes in this beautiful medieval village.
