Top 5 thing to do in Zanzibar
Zanzibar is such a special destination. With so much to see and do, from the fantastic views to the cultural experiences, it's a must-visit. Only a short flight from Johannesburg, it's a destination that you can easily travel to for a relaxing holiday.
Here are my top 5 things to do on a Zanzibar Holiday:
1. Explore Stone Town
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and after visiting Stone Town it's easy to understand why. The most amazing old buildings and architecture, alleyways, shopping and the smell of spices in the air are an absolute delight and a photographer’s dream. Be sure to visit Freddy Mercury’s home and explore the Old Fort.
2. Shop in the local markets
You must visit the local markets for the fantastic fresh fruit and vegetables along with the beautiful spices on offer. This is a great way to be a part of the daily hustle and bustle of the market.
Don’t forget that there is also some lovely local curio shopping to be done in Zanzibar (beautifully coloured materials, beaded jewellery, wood carvings, woven baskets and then the local spices).
3. Tour the former Slave Market
Be sure to take a tour of the former Slave Market. There’s so much to absorb while visiting this museum and hearing the heart-wrenching stories. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable.
4. Head for the beach
You will spend most of your time on Zanzibar’s beaches. There are many different hotels to choose from, each offering a different experience. Some of the beaches (especially the East Coast) are tide-dependent, and the ocean pulls back in low tide. Don’t let this discourage you as it’s a fantastic experience to take a walk and see all the fascinating creatures that live in the sea. When the tide pulls back again, you can then have a refreshing swim.
5. Sunset dhow cruise
The sunsets are magnificent in Zanzibar, and one of the most popular ways to experience them is on a dhow cruise. The different colours of the ocean are mesmerizing along with the white sandy beaches.
Zanzibar should definitely be on everyone’s bucket list. This is truly a destination that should not be missed!
