1.    Piton de la Fournaise

One of the best views is at the Nez de Boeuf, an incredible viewpoint at an altitude of 2070 metres. Another exciting view is at the Le Pas de Bellecombe at an altitude of 2311m overlooking the volcano. On your way back, stop by at the Notre Dame Des Laves church that miraculously survived a previous eruption.

Start with an ascending dive through the village of “la Riviere Saint Louis” before crossing the Saint Etienne River on a road known as the “400 turns”. The village of Cilaos is at an altitude of 1300m, in one of three calderas. A caldera is a shallow valley formed by the collapse of the centre of a dormant volcano. On your return, view the geysers or bowers along the shores of “L’etang Sale” where the lava rocks and black sand beaches can be seen.
